That might seem like an obvious question, but it's actually a very good one. Most people know what a skateboard is and if you are assuming that an electric skateboard is just a skateboard that runs on an electric battery, you would be correct. No difference really. The term "motorized longboard" is just another term for an electric skateboard. However, there is a difference between boards. Just like with regular skateboards, some electric boards are longer than others and made for faster speeds or more stable off-road riding.
Whether your first choice in an electric rideable is a skateboard, scooter, bike, mini-Segway or an electric uniwheel, you might ask the same question. Each category has advantages and disadvantages and you simply must weigh the difference for your unique needs and wants. Some of the advantages of an electric skateboard are:
And thirdly, electric rideables are GREEN! Their electric motors have extremely efficient energy-consumed to miles-traveled ratios. And of course, electric motors give off no emissions, which allows you to ride them indoors. They do draw electric power during recharge, but that electricity causes fourteen times less greenhouse gas emissions than driving a car. It's not unusual for an electric rideable to have a carbon footprint equivalent of to 1,500 miles/gallon or more. And to add to their efficiency, many electric rideables are equipped with regenerative braking that recharges the battery when you are coasting.
Definitely. In fact, electric skateboards are one of the best alternatives for Last Mile transportation. Click here to read more about The Last Mile and why electric rideables are perfect for that.
This is a more complicated question than you might imagine, but we'll keep it simple: The bottom line is cost versus performance. Li-ion batteries are lighter and last much longer, around 3-5 years before losing significant capacity, but they are much more expensive. An SLA battery is the same type of battery used in a car, are much heavier than a Li-ion battery, and will usually last about 1-2 years. But they are much less expensive. Li-ion batteries are certainly the better of the two and for some electric rideables are the only option, since size and weight can be such critical factors. However, for skateboards that's not always the case and since the cost-difference can be significant, some of our best-selling boards use SLA batteries. If you really want to know more about the difference between Li-ion and SLA batteries you can read about it here.
Some electric skateboards can travel at speeds up to 25 MPH. That is very fast, in fact, faster than most people would want to go. If you fall off at that speed it will probably hurt. As with any other rideable device, you should take appropriate safety precautions. Our philosophy is SAFETY FIRST! Always wear a helmet, as well as other appropriate safety gear (e.g. elbow or knee pads), and observe safe riding rules. Use your own good judgment is great advice.
Yes and no, some can and some cannot. For example, the MotoTec 1600W Electric Skateboard is intended to be ridden off-road, whereas the MotoTec 600W On-Road Electric-Skateboard is specifically built to be an on-road board. Every electric skateboard is different in this regard, so please refer to the description of each individual product on its product page.
